| London, May 26(ANI): The major difference between the West Indies team playing the Test match at Trent Bridge in 1976 and the team playing currently against England is that the this team doesn't have any great player like Viv Richards in it, according to sports journalist Henry Blofeld. Blofeld believes the current Windies Test team desperately needs a player with the caliber of former legends like Clive Lloyd, Gordon Greenidge, Alvin Kallicharran, Roy Fredericks, Michael Holding and Andy Roberts, to rescue them from their current pitiable state. "Thirty-six years is a long time. Anyone who saw the West Indies play at Trent Bridge in 1976 would have watched in disbelief as their top order failed to take advantage of winning the toss on a belter of a pitch on the first day of this match," Blofeld wrote in his column for the Daily Express. "In two words, the biggest difference between these two sides from the Caribbean was Viv Richards. But this was only the biggest difference: there were a great many others. The names in the earlier side would make any cricket lover's mouth water. Captain Clive Lloyd, Gordon Greenidge, Alvin Kallicharran, Roy Fredericks and Andy Roberts are just five," he added. "The players of the Richards era, which includes names such as Michael Holding, Joel Garner, Malcolm Marshall, Desmond Haynes and all the others, were born with an unusual flair and ability which in some cases turned into genius," he further wrote. Blofeld said only Shivnarine Chanderpaul fell in the bracket of being branded as a current Windies legend. He wrote: "In the present side, the only name with any resonance is Shivnarine Chanderpaul, although Marlon Samuels yesterday showed he may now be up to the task." (ANI) |
