Clean sweep over Lanka could take India to top of ODI rankings

Islamabad, July 20(ANI): India could reach the summit of International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings, toppling Australia, if they clean sweep Sri Lanka in the five-match one-day series at their home.

India last held the number one position for a short time in September 2009, but they have a chance to reclaim their one-day crown, The Daily Times reports.

The series, which starts in Hambantota on Saturday (July 21), brings together the finalists in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, held in Mumbai in April last year. India won that match by six wickets to lift the trophy for the first time in 28 years.

After years of domination by Australia, the ICC ODI Team Rankings table is now very tight after Michael Clarke's team suffered a 4-0 hammering in England recently.

Only two rating points separate the top four teams with South Africa and England sandwiched between Australia and fourth placed India.

At the conclusion of the series, the ICC will publish the annual update of the table that will discard the results of ODIs played prior to August 2010. (ANI)
