Swann blasts ‘witch hunt’ against ‘best captain in world cricket’ Strauss

London, Apr 5(ANI): Graeme Swann has backed England’s under-fire captain Andrew Strauss, and claimed he is the best leader in world cricket after his team enjoyed their best day of Test cricket this year.

“He hasn’t shown any signs of being under pressure over what I see as a witch hunt.

He’s the best captain in world cricket and world-class opening batsman. I’m a strong ally and he’ll get nothing but support from me,” The Telegraph quoted Swann, as saying.

“Everyone was rooting for Straussy, who has come under what I consider very unfair criticism. He’ll be kicking himself not to have gone on to a bigger score, but he gave us a solid start and we’re delighted with how it’s panned out,” he added.

His statement came after Strauss scored 61 on the second day of the second and final Test against Sri Lanka in the ongoing series.

Strauss has been under the scanner following his own poor run of form and his team losing four successive Tests.

England still need to win the match to level the series, but Swann expressed confidence that Strauss can overcome criticism.

“I can understand when someone’s in a position when things don’t go well, and there is pressure building up. But Strauss should be afforded leeway for at least two to three years. There is no man as capable of leading a team in world cricket,” he said. (ANI)
